kuier
Language: Afrikaans · [ˈkœiər] · Pronunciation: KAY-er
Meaning
dropping in on someone and staying for hours — a proper visit
The story
A kuier starts as a cup of coffee on the stoep and ends whenever it ends; a braai grows steadily more likely as the afternoon wears on. The Dutch cousin kuieren just means going for a stroll, so somewhere on the way south the walk became the destination. English would call it a visit, minus the leaving time.
