empalagar

Language: Spanish · [empalaˈɣaɾ] · Pronunciation: em-pah-lah-GAR

More Spanish words · More about food

Meaning

to be too sweet to finish — a pudding, or a person

The story

The RAE gives it two lives: food too sweet to get through, and a person too sweet to bear. Spanish uses the second freely, so a suitor who sends nine messages a day is empalagoso. English keeps the job for cloying, a word more often written than said.

The four rounds

Which language is it from?
Spanish
Which feeling does it carry?
Slightly queasy from too much richness
Where would you hear it?
A third slice of chocolate cake
What does it mean?
To turn the stomach with sweetness

How it went

Round two, feeling, was where most points went.
