Meaning

the look between two people each waiting for the other to make the first move — a silent standoff

The story

The Yaghan of Tierra del Fuego folded a whole scene into it: a shared glance between two people, each hoping the other will make the move neither dares to. The language itself is nearly gone; its last fluent speaker, Cristina Calderón, died in 2022. What English keeps of it is the standoff.
