Meaning
the afternoon snack, above all the children's one at four
The story
Goûter means to taste, and as a noun it is the four o'clock break French children expect after school: bread with a bar of chocolate, or a biscuit. Adults are supposed to have outgrown it. English has teatime, which in Britain can mean a whole meal.
