cwtch
Language: Welsh · [kʊtʃ] · Pronunciation: KUTCH (as in butch)
Meaning
a hug that is also a safe place — a cuddle
The story
A cwtch is also the cubbyhole under the stairs, and that is the clue: both meanings are about a small place where nothing can reach you. Wales voted it the nation's favourite word in a 2007 poll. English offers cuddle, which any Welsh speaker will tell you is not quite the same.
