Meaning

a working day taken off to bridge a public holiday and the weekend

The story

When a public holiday falls on a Thursday, the Friday becomes a Brückentag, the day that bridges the gap to the weekend, and a good part of Germany takes it off. Some firms simply close. English makes it a long weekend and books it in January.
